KENINGAU: A culinary art student at Keningau Vocational College, Ivory Ivy Corvet Hadzlin, 17, emerged champion at the 2023 national-level KV Skills competition in the cooking category held at Seri Iskandar Vocational College, Perak.

The second and third placings went to Ester Prati Mili from Bintulu Vocational College and Alya Hazirah Mohamad Isa from Dato’ Undang Haji Muhamad Sharip Vocational College, respectively.

The competition, organised by the Vocational Education and Technical Training Division (BPLTV) of the Ministry of Education, held on Oct 13-18, was divided into 21 categories that tested the skills of Vocational College students who had won their respective State-level competitions in the field of their study.

“The Sabah contingent won third place in three categories, runner-up in one category and Ivory Ivy was the only Sabah student to win the title in the category she participated in,” said the College Head of Research and Innovation, Dr Sirhajwan Idek here.

He said, Ivory Ivy represented the Sabah/Labuan in the cooking category when she was announced as the champion of the category during the zone level competition which took place on July 14-16.

For the national level, he said, she was assisted by her classmate, Reisha Qistina Rosli, as required by the competition.

“A total of 10 State zone winners competed in the cooking category at the national-level where they had to complete seven challenges within two days.

“Each challenge requires them to prepare a certain dish. Three judges consisting of leading chefs evaluated the cooking results,” he said.

Dr Sirhajwan said Keningau Vocational College represented Sabah/Labuan in three categories. Apart from cooking, two cosmetology students Shamsiah Dumandan and Maylisa Ivyina Telis competed in the beauty therapy category while Alvent Chin Kian Wen from automotive technology competed in the automotive category.

He said the college team was led by Amirullah Abdul Karim together with four teachers, namely Freadoline Fook Liew, Bibiana Paulus, Vienny Balakrishnan and Nor Ruzaimah Zahari.

Director of Keningau Vocational College, Nordin Akup, who was also present during the prize presentation ceremony, expressed his pride in the success of the college team.

He is confident that this achievement can motivate other students to constantly refine the vocational skills they learn in their respective programmes.
