Lesen terbang: Middleman arrested by MACC in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested another man suspected of complicity with the law enforcement officers in related to the issuance of illegal driving licences or ‘lesen terbang’.   

According to the sources, the man in his 40s, who was believed to be the middleman in the RM300,000 bribery case, was detained by MACC about 4pm on Tuesday when he was called up to provide statements at Lahad Datu MACC office.

The suspect, a foreigner, was believed to have committed the offence between 2021 and 2022. 

He was also suspected of bribing the law enforcers to issue licence to the candidate without undergoing a driving test.

“The modus operandi of the ‘middleman’ was to request bribes of between RM400 and RM1,200 from candidates which was later handed over to the law enforcers,” said the sources.

Sabah MACC Director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

MACC applied to remand the suspect at the Lahad Datu Magistrate Court, Wednesday. Magistrate Ryan Sagiran Rayner Junior granted the remand order for seven days until Nov 29.

On Tuesday, MACC arrested four law enforcement officers on suspicion of accepting bribes amounting to RM300,000 from driving licence candidates and agents.

All the suspects, in their 30s, were arrested at 4pm on Sunday when they were asked to appear at the Sabah MACC office to give evidence.
