Kuala Lumpur: The sessions court here will rule on Nov 29 if Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s bid to secure the permanent release of his passport is successful.
Judge Azura Alwi set the date after hearing submissions from Muhyiddin’s lawyers, K Kumaraendran and Amer Hamzah Arshad, as well as deputy public prosecutors Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin and Lim Wai Keong today.
The former prime minister, who is facing money laundering charges, wanted to vary the conditions for his bail, including the permanent release of his passport.
He said he needed his passport to go for a family holiday in London and a medical check-up in Singapore next month.
Muhyiddin faces three counts of money laundering totalling RM200 million.
In August, the High Court struck out his four abuse of power charges, citing that they were defective and did not disclose any offence known to law.
The prosecution filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal, which will hear the case in February next year.
Earlier today, Kumaraendran told the court Muhyiddin is entitled to get his passport back permanently as there was a “material change of circumstances” since he was charged.
He said Muhyiddin has also posted bail of RM2 million in two sureties after he was charged, and he is not a flight risk.
However, Wan Shaharuddin objected to Muhyiddin’s bid, citing that the three money laundering charges are still pending in court.
He said Muhyiddin can file applications to secure a temporary release of his passport whenever he wants.
