Kota Kinabalu: Pet owners spend over RM200 each month on their pets, said Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

The Sabah Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister said studies showed a growing trend in pet ownership with Malaysians investing substantially in their pets’ well-being.

“The rise in demand for pet-related products and services underscores the resilience and potential for growth in the pet industry,” he said.

Jeffrey said he viewed it as a unique opportunity for Sabah in this growing market.

He said Sabah would be able to produce high-quality, nutritious pet food, thanks to its natural resources in agriculture and fisheries.

“By leveraging these sectors, we can reduce pet food costs, making pet ownership more affordable in Sabah,” Jeffrey said, adding that Sabah could work towards becoming a leading hub for pet food production in the region.

He said it could enhance market leadership and ensure that Sabahans had access to economical and nutritious options for their pets.

Jeffrey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister 1, said it would be exciting to explore partnerships and strategies to achieve this goal.
