Cement lorry driver killed in Tawau crash

The overturned cement-mixer lorry which killed its driver.
TAWAU: A man was killed after the cement-mixer lorry he was driving crashed and overturned in Kg Serudung Baru, Batu 15, on Tuesday.
According to Tawau District Deputy Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh, the impact pinned the 59-year-old victim in the driver’s seat.
ADVERTISEMENT The deceased was identified as Mohammad Jain Habib Kusin @ Husin by the Fire and Rescue Department.
“A team from the Fire and Rescue Department assisted the man out of the lorry. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical team,” Champin said.
Initial findings showed the lorry was delivering cement from Jalan Kau Sing to Jalan Lucia in Kg Serudung Baru for a bridge construction project when the accident occurred at 3.20pm.
The man was believed to have lost control of the lorry while negotiating a downhill stretch, causing it to overturn and trapping the man in the driver’s seat.
ADVERTISEMENT The impact also left the lorry badly damaged. Witnesses have been urged to come forward to facilitate police investigations.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jemishin Ujin said their rescue team was deployed to the area 29km away after receiving a distress call at 3.59pm.
ADVERTISEMENT The team used a 22-tonne towing truck to help the victim get out of the lorry.
The operation ended at 6.37pm after the team made sure there were no more hazards in the area.
