Kota Kinabalu: In line with the Government’s call to narrow the digital divide, mobile network operator U Mobile Sdn Bhd (U Mobile) is set to aggressively expand its network in Sabah next year and provide better connectivity for Sabahans in both urban and rural areas.

Its Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen said U Mobile has 800 sites in Sabah at present, encompassing a population coverage of 88.4 per cent.

“We are going to expand with another 600 sites and with this we will reach more than 90 per cent population coverage in Sabah alone, in both urban and rural areas.

“This is also a collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in terms of making sure that rural areas have internet access, so that everyone can enjoy internet in Sabah,” he told reporters during an engagement session with the media, here, Thursday.

Woon added that U Mobile targets to increase its sites by 100.2 per cent for the 4G network in East Malaysia by the end of 2024.

He said sites would also be rolled out in rural areas that are off the electricity grid, where sustainable solutions such as solar hybrid energy will be used to power the site.

U Mobile’s first solar hybrid site was launched in Kimanis earlier this year. He added that the latest technologies are being adopted at the sites, including 4T4R (four transmitting antennas, four receiving antennas) and massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) paired with 4G spectrum bands that provide better quality connectivity.

“We use all four of our 4G spectrum bands, 900 megahertz (MHz), 1,800 MHz, 2,100 MHz and 2,600 Mhz, to provide the capacity required for users to have a seamless internet experience,” said Woon.

He said the new plans mark the start of U Mobile’s increased focus in East Malaysia, with more initiatives in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, U Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Navin Manian said a new range of 5G postpaid and prepaid plans were recently unveiled for subscribers in East Malaysia, namely the U Postpaid Borneo 38 plan, U Postpaid Borneo 68 plan and U Prepaid Borneo 20 plan.

“The prepaid plan is RM20 a month but promotionally we are launching it at RM15. It comes with 2,000GB of data, for both 4G and 5G networks with no restrictions.

“There is no speed cap so you get unlimited speeds depending on whether you have a 4G or 5G phone. You can use it for your hotspot,” he said.

He added that the U Postpaid Borneo 38 plan, priced at RM38 per month, will be launched with a promotion of RM28 per month.

“There are no speed caps for this as well. It is truly unlimited with no strings attached at full 4G and 5G speeds, as well as unlimited use of hotspot. Calls are unlimited as well.

"Meanwhile, U Mobile has marked its presence in this year's Harvest Festival (Kaamatan) with campaign activities that celebrated the significant festivity on Sabah's calendar," he said.
