658 take part in cycling event

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 658 domestic and foreign participants took part in the GFNY (Gran Fondo New York) Kota Kinabalu 2023 on Sunday.
The cycling event featuring two categories with a distance of 82.5 kilometres and 130.2 kilometres was flagged off by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin at the Menara Tun Mustapha in Likas at 6.15am.
ADVERTISEMENT They participants comprising local cyclists and from the Peninsula as well as from Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, the United States, Japan, Switzerland, Austria and Germany had to go through several districts including Putatan, Penampang, Inanam, Tuaran and Tamparuli.
Present at the ceremony were Youth and Sports Ministry’s permanent secretary Datuk Manusr Asun, Director General of Tourism Malaysia Dato’ Dr Ammar Abd Ghapar and organising chairman Syed Mohammed Feisal Dato’ Syed Hussain.
Kota Kinabalu was earlier chosen as the second location after Kuala Lumpur to stage the international event because of its strategic location in the Borneo archipelago and as one of the main sports tourism destinations in the region.
Syed Mohammed Feisal, who is also the managing director of FR Exhibitions Sdn Bhd and franchise holder of GFNY Malaysia, had indicated that they have intention to place Sabah as one of the GFNY World Series Calendar by making Kota Kinabalu the host.
