Sabah Games: Kota Kinabalu look to defend crown

Kota Kinabalu: Team Kota Kinabalu are set to defend their overall title at the 10th Sabah Games (Saga) scheduled to start on December 16.

The contingent led by Sairullizam Sukor with a total of 369 athletes will be contesting in 22 sports over seven-day at several venues situated in Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Tuaran and Keningau.

Chef De Mission Robert Lipon, who is also City Hall deputy director general (operations), said the teams are fully prepared and is confident that they are ready to deliver the goods

“Saga will be officially starting next week and Datuk Mayor has wanted us to defend our title.

“I am glad to see that all the team managers have been working hard to get their teams ready and I would also like to thank all the parties involved for their support.”

He said this after a meeting with all the team managers followed by the flag handing over ceremony held at the City Hall on Saturday.

At the previous meet in 2019 held in Keningau, Kota Kinabalu contingent won a total of 30 golds, 26 silvers and 23 bronzes to dethrone defending champions Keningau.

Karate was the biggest gold medal contributor with six, track and field with five, badminton with four, archery with three, two each from golf, table tennis, petanque, and one each from basketball,  muaythai, tennis, hockey, sepak takraw and boxing.

This year, a total of 182 gold, 182 silver and 262 bronze medals are up for grabs, with 103 events in the men’s category, 75 in the women’s category and four in the mixed category.
