Filipino and Indonesian emerge chess champs

Kota Kinabalu: Daniel Quizon and Diajeng Theresa Singgih emerged as champions in the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship 2023.

Daniel from the Philippines won the men’s category while Diajeng from Indonesia won the women’s category.

The prizes were presented by the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor’s representative, Datuk Ceaser Mandela Malakun, here, recently.

According to Caesar, Sabah being selected as the venue for the competition can, to some extent, unearth new talents.

In addition, the tournament can also be used as a preparation for Sabah chess players to compete in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Sarawak, next year.

Also present were the Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) President Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi, the Sabah Chess Association President Muammar

Julkarnain and State Education Department Deputy Director of the Pupil Development Sector Muddin Beting. 

The tournament, held on Dec 1-9, attracted a total of 59 participants from various countries including Mongolia, Hong Kong, South Korea and China.
