PETALING JAYA: Perodua is working with an international automotive company to come up with a prototype electric vehicle (EV), says investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.
The minister said this was part of the carmaker’s efforts to lead the production of affordable EVs in Malaysia, as outlined under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
However, Tengku Zafrul did not disclose the name of the international company.
“Perodua’s large-scale production (of affordable EVs) is scheduled for the end of 2025.
“Thank you, Perodua, for assisting Malaysia in advancing EV technology and boosting sustainable mobility in the country,” he said in a Facebook post.
Last November, Perodua president and CEO Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the company was aiming for its EVs and hybrid vehicles to contribute up to 20% of total car sales by 2030.
The government is looking to have 1.5 million EVs on Malaysian roads by 2040, significantly higher than its previous target of 90,000 units.
An excise duty and sales tax exemption for locally assembled EVs is in force until Dec 31, 2027, while the import and excise duty exemption for imported EVs has been extended to Dec 31, 2025.
EVs are also exempt from road tax until end-2025.
