Sabah to host Asian Sports Medicine Congress in April

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah will be hosting the 18th Asian Federation of Sports Medicine Congress in conjunction with the 8th ISN Sports Medicine and Sports Science Conference here at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), from April 26-28.

It is a joint collaboration between the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM), the Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine (MASM) and the National Sports Institute of Malaysia (ISN).

In the press conference held here last week, Dr Chan Kin Yuen, vice president of MASM and co-organising chairperson provided a comprehensive overview of the landmark congress that represents a historic milestone in the fields of sports and exercise medicine, and sports and exercise science in Malaysia to serve as a global platform for professionals to exchange innovative ideas, research findings, and advancements in sports and exercise medicine, sports and exercise science, sport management and physical education.

The congress will feature 12 symposiums, four workshops, and pre-congress webinars, paper, poster presentation and booth exhibitions covering a wide array of topics in sports and exercise medicine, sports and exercise science, sports management and physical education.

They will be conducted by speakers from various leading international organisations including International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).

Co-organising chairperson Dr Alston Choong also revealed that there will be a AFSM Young Research Award with the total prize money up to US$2,000 to encourage the participations of below 40-year-olds to submit and present their innovative and significant research in the field.

ISN board chairperson Datuk Marina Chin who was present said the joint efforts highlighted the partnership’s shared commitment to bring together the expertise of international organisations to create one of the most prestigious and influential congresses in the world.

Meanwhile, Olympic Council Malaysia (OCM)’s East Malaysia committee chairperson Dr KH Tan, who is also ISN executive board member, extended his gratitude on behalf of the organiser to the State government, all the ministries, associations and partners for their unwavering support.

He added that the congress is not only a significant academic event but also a catalyst for tourism in Sabah and will further establish Kota Kinabalu as an ideal destination for international events and academic exchange.

Extended early bird rate is available until Jan 31 and the deadline for abstract submission is on Feb 29.
