PETALING JAYA: Police are looking for a British couple to aid in their investigation into the case of a traffic policeman who allegedly offered them a speeding summons “discount” to be paid on the spot.
Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri said the couple was believed to have gone to a neighbouring country, Bernama reported.
He said police were also trying to identify the traffic policeman involved as well as the location and time of the incident.
“The case is being investigated by Bukit Aman, the federal police headquarters,” he told reporters at the Perak police headquarters.
Meanwhile, according to Berita Harian, the case was being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion and Section 17 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 for giving or accepting gratification.
Posted by the couple on their YouTube channel “TREAD the globe”, the video shows the traffic policeman accusing them of driving at 80kph in a 60kph speed zone, and saying that he had to issue a summons to them.
However, he then offered to “reduce” the RM300 summons, which he said could be paid at a police station, to an on-the-spot “fine” of RM100 to settle the matter.
As seen in the video, the couple spoke of being confused about whether they were speeding but agreed that it was better to have paid the “discounted summons” than go to a police station.
