MATUNGGONG: A teenage boy drowned during a fishing trip at Milau Dam, off Jalan Garau, near here, Friday.

Kudat Fire and Rescue Station chief Ishak Abas said the victim Crit Ae Ryan Yeen Malaysen, 14, went to the dam with his friends They Falavio, Jerry Andyevendra, Bonny Mojiea and Leo Anryson, all aged between 17 and 23.

"They swam together to a land area (small island) in the middle of the river about 50 metres from the river bank to find a better fishing location," he said.

After swimming halfway, the victim drowned, believed to be due to exhaustion, while the other three reached the small island, and the other one made a U-turn and headed back to the riverbank.

Ishak said the Kudat Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call at 3pm before its personnel rushed to the scene.

The victim was found at 5.40pm at a depth of 11 feet at the bottom of the river, on the spot where he was reported to have drowned.
