Civil servant charged with cheating Socso

TAWAU: A 37-year-old civil servant was charged in the Special Corruption Section Court for cheating by giving false details to the Social Security Organisation (Socso), five years ago.

Muhamad Rajis Muhid, a Grade 19 enforcement officer at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department here pleaded not guilty before Judge Jason Juga.

Rajis was accused of cheating the Local Office Manager of Perkeso Tawau, Joseph Immanuel by giving untrue statements under Section 12 C (2) and (3) of the Workers’ Social Security Act 1969 regarding living with his two children, thus prompting Joseph to approve the payment of the child’s Dependent’s Benefit each worth RM9.1429 per day.

The offence allegedly committed at the Tawau Local Social Welfare Office on March, 27, 2019.

Rajis was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code which carries a prison sentence of between one year and a maximum of 10 years and caning, and can be fined, if convicted.

The court set March 26 for case management and released Rajis on a bail of RM10,000 with RM2,000 deposited with one surety.

The accused was also required to report to the MACC Office every two months and was ordered to surrender his international passport to the court.

Earlier, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Prosecuting Officer Norsham Saharom proposed bail of RM10,000 with additional conditions.

Rajis, who was not represented, requested that the security deposit be reduced to a minimum rate considering that he only receives a net salary of RM1,400 and that he has other commitments such as housing loan payments, personal loans and cars.

According to him, he also supports his wife and children as well as his siblings who are not working.
