Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Muslim Chamber of Commerce (DPMS) annual Ramadan gift basket donation benefits 400 in the Kota Kinabalu and Putatan areas this year.
Its Honorary Secretary, Ansar Maidin, said the event held since 2004 not only helps the needy but also inculcate the spirit of giving.
“It is also a platform for the corporate sector to carry out their corporate social responsibility.
“There are many traders who do not know where or how to start. It is imperative that they are always charitable despite having financial setbacks of their own like the rising cost of living.
“We hope the government continues to give us the support and opportunity,” he said of the event in collaboration with Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Datuk Dr Roland Chia.
“The recipients are chosen by each respective village chief. The funding mostly comes from DPMS members who are mostly traders or restaurateurs. We have more than 3,000 members.
“This year we managed to collect RM30,000 which is RM10,000 less than last year’s donation focused on areas in Beaufort. But at least recipients can now look forward to Hari Raya,” he said.
Meanwhile, he urged Muslim traders in Sabah to join the DPMS and added that the chamber is multicultural and welcomes all races.
