KUCHING: A new general operations force (GOF) battalion will be established in Sri Aman to improve security at the border between Sarawak and Kalimantan.
Sarawak GOF commander Che Ghazali Che Awang said the battalion is likely to be established this year.
“Our strength at the Sarawak border will be further enhanced with one more battalion,” he told reporters after an aerial survey of the area today.
“The GOF team focusses on guarding security areas and monitoring illegal activities, specifically smuggling, at border areas.”
Che Ghazali, who spent nearly 90 minutes inspecting the Telok Melano-Temajuk border area, said the GOF has also tightened control at border areas to crack down on smuggling activities ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
This was especially to prevent the smuggling of subsidised goods such as cooking oil and gas cylinders.
