Kota Kinabalu: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered an Aidilfitri festive gift to Sabahans on Saturday by announcing that the State will get its own National Heart Institute, the second such facility after the existing one in Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar made the announcement during his speech at the  National Hari Raya Open House held at the Sabah International Convention Centre here Saturday.

He said the new specialist cardiac hospital will raise the standards of heart treatment in East Malaysia and ensure patients no longer need to travel to the peninsular for many complex procedures.

"In line with this government's commitment to inclusive development, I am pleased to announce that Sabah will be home to the country's second National Heart Institute. This will provide advanced diagnosis and treatment for all heart conditions for residents of Sabah," the Prime Minister said.

Anwar's announcement was met with warm applause from the hundreds gathered at the open house, including federal and state government leaders, community representatives and members of the public.
