KOTA KINABALU: Police determined that a teenage girl’s alleged kidnapping on Thursday was a fabrication to escape religious classes.
District Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda advised the public, especially teenagers, not to make up stories about criminal cases.
“These actions can cause panic among the community. Making a false report is also an offence,” he said in a statement.
In a post that went viral on Facebook, the girl claimed to have been kidnapped by a group of men in a white van in Tanjung Aru.
She said she managed to escape when the kidnappers stopped the vehicle as one of them wanted to answer the call of nature near Sutera Harbour.
She said later that she happened to get the help of a man from Kampung Baru before concerned public members found her at Wisma Sedco.
“The Kota Kinabalu police also advises the public not to arbitrarily upload any pictures or statements that may cause anxiety and annoyance to the public,” Kasim stressed.
