PETALING JAYA: The government has allocated RM15.11 billion to implement 270 entrepreneurship programmes this year, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Citing the SME Integrated Plan of Action (SMEIPA) 2023/2024 report, Zahid said the allocation would benefit 479,350 recipients, Bernama reported.

Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, said all the programmes had been planned by various ministries, agencies and state governments.

“I see that the existing SMEIPA reporting needs to be strengthened so that it can be used as the main reference by all stakeholders, especially ministries and agencies that are in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“This is to ensure there is no overlap in the implementation of programmes for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) throughout the country,” he said in a statement after chairing a meeting of the National Entrepreneur and SME Development Council.

He said, based on the report, an average of 191 entrepreneurship and MSME development programmes were implemented every year with an annual commitment of RM9.6 billion.

“In fact, in 2023 alone, RM15.48 billion has been spent on 258 entrepreneurship and MSME development programmes,” said Zahid, who is also chairman of the council.

Zahid said the meeting also agreed that the MSME Status Registration System should be integrated with other main systems, such as the central database hub (Padu), the Companies Commission of Malaysia’s database, and GovTech Malaysia.

He said such integration between the databases could further improve the government’s delivery system, especially in entrepreneurship development.

The MSME Status Registration System is aimed at improving the coordination of entrepreneur development programmes implemented by SME Corp Malaysia.

He said the meeting also confirmed the addition of members to the council from his ministry, the investment, trade and industry ministry, the finance ministry, the economy ministry as well as the entrepreneur and cooperatives development ministry.

He also highlighted the importance of avoiding duplication of programmes, upholding transparency in the delivery of government services and reducing wastage of resources.
