PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki today rubbished claims that five Perlis assemblymen are set to be detained by the anti-graft agency.

According to Harian Metro, Azam said such claims were merely rumours.

Yesterday, MACC special operations division senior director Azmi Kamaruzaman also denied the allegations, saying they were not true “for now”.

The claims began circulating on social media over the weekend, while a news portal quoted an anonymous senior politician in Perlis as saying the five assemblymen would be arrested by MACC soon.

PAS leads the Perlis government, with Shukri Ramli serving as menteri besar.

Shukri’s son and four others were arrested last month in an investigation into the alleged falsification of documents related to claims for infrastructure projects worth RM600,000.

The five were released on MACC bail on April 26 while Shukri was detained by the anti-graft agency on April 31 before being released on MACC bail the same day.

The Perlis menteri besar had given a statement in connection with an alleged abuse of power case, spending nearly eight hours at MACC’s headquarters in Putrajaya.
