KOTA BELUD: A total of 115 Village Chiefs from the Usukan and Kadamaian state constituencies attended the second series of the 2024 Excellent Village Chiefs Leadership Transformation Course at the Kadamaian Square Hall on Tuesday.

The course aimed to provide clearer knowledge and understanding to the Village Chiefs, comprising 15 Native Chiefs and 100 Village Heads, to better prepare them for current challenges.

The event was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who emphasised the importance of empowering the functions and roles of the Native Courts.

Dr Joachim, who also is State Local Government and Housing Minister, highlighted the significant responsibilities of Village Chiefs in positively impacting local communities, fostering unity and ensuring the adherence to Native Customary Laws.

“Enhancing the competency and integrity levels of Village Chiefs in Kota Belud is a necessity,” he said.

He said the course would add value to the skills and knowledge required by Village Chiefs to carry out their duties more efficiently, in line with the State Government’s aspirations related to strengthening integrity and governance empowerment.

The course focused on various aspects, including native customary land rights, document issuance and mediation as an alternative dispute resolution.

Dr Joachim was confident that the knowledge and skills gained through the course would enable the Village Chiefs to provide better service and contribute to strengthening the identity and cultural heritage of natives.

Congratulating the participants, Dr Joachim encouraged them to use the course as a starting point to improve leadership quality within Sabah’s native community, with the aim of making the Kota Belud Native Court a benchmark for other Native Courts in the State.
