Kota Kinabalu: Kumpulan Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) on Wednesday handed over business zakat totalling RM1, 458,893 for the year 2022 to the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis).
The zakat contribution was presented by BPMB Board Member Norazilla Md Tahir to Muis Deputy President Datuk Malai Ali Malai Ahmad.

The handover ceremony was witnessed by the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin during a courtesy visit by the BPMB Board Members at Istana Seri Kinabalu.
Also in attendance were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister (Religious Affairs) Datuk Ruslan Muharam, Sabah Mufti and Chairman of the Zakat and Fitrah Committee Datuk Bungsu Aziz Jaafar, BPMB’s Head of Corporate Banking Group Wee Yee Tat and Head of Shariah Advisory Management KPMB Zuhairi Zakaria.
Malai Ali said that as of May this year, Muis had collected a total of RM45 million in zakat funds.
“The zakat collection has been distributed to eligible recipients, including asnaf (tithe beneficiary) groups, scholarships, assistance to suraus and mosques, as well as aid for school students and circumcision ceremonies,” he said.

“Until this month, the distribution of zakat that we have carried out is estimated at RM43 million. We do this because we will not retain the zakat funds, but distribute them as hoped by those who paid zakat in accordance with Islamic law,” Malai Ali added.
