SANDAKAN: Sabah will be represented by six boxers at the National Talent Carnival Series 2/2024 Boxing Tournament at Melaka Mall in Air Keroh, Melaka from May 23-26.

Sabah Boxing Association chief coach Agus Diong said all the participants are boxers under the aegis of Sabah Lee Boxing Club.

They are Ahmad Rashid Alfin (minimumweight), Mohammad Danny Mohamad Fikri (light flyweight), Mohamad Khairul Izwan Julaimin (flyweight), Ilhan Hafizzie Arshad (super flyweight), Mohammad Shamizan Mohd Seriman (bantamweight) and Mohammad Iman Ashrafr Angeles (featherweight).

“Of these six athletes, I have high confidence in the three State gold medallists Ahmad Rashid (46kg), Mohamad Iman Ashraf (57kg) and Mohammad Shamizan (54kg).

“However, I am also confident in the performance of Mohamad Danny, Khairul Izwan and Ilhan Hafizzie. They have shown their potential as talented boxers through their respective training and discipline,” he said when met after giving final training to them at the Sandakan Sports Complex Boxing Arena, here, Saturday.

Agus was also assisted by Mohamad Syahran Hafie Mohammad Fauzie as assistant coach.

The team is scheduled to leave for Melaka today (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, Agus hopes to produce more boxing talents from Sabah, especially Sandakan.

“It is proven by young boxer Khairul Azim (featherweight) who has now reached the level of a professional boxer.

“He just won a gold medal after defeating an Indonesian boxer in the World Boxing Championship (WBC) held in Kuching, Sarawak, last week,” he said.

Agus also expressed his appreciation to Lee Boxing Club, which was guided by his friend Mohd Fadzli Asmat.

Established in 2019, the club has successfully produced many talented and disciplined boxers.
