PETALING JAYA: One Malaysian is in critical but stable condition after sustaining injuries on Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ321 from London to Singapore which encountered severe turbulence yesterday.
Wisma Putra said nine of the 16 Malaysians who were on board the flight are currently being treated at hospitals in Thailand.
Six of them are being treated at Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital while three others are receiving treatment at Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital, it said.
“According to both hospitals, all of them suffered physical and internal injuries, with one person in critical but stable condition. They are under surveillance and awaiting medical results.
“The embassy has been coordinating with local authorities and hospitals, with consular officers visiting the Malaysians who were admitted to several hospitals in Bangkok to provide consular assistance,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The SIA aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok yesterday after encountering sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin at 37,000ft, about 10 hours after departing Heathrow Airport.
A 73-year-old British man died on board, believed to be due to a heart attack, as the pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to Bangkok
