Sabah to study feasibility: Sarawak’s example on use of English

Kota Kinabalu: The implementation of teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics subjects in English in Sabah is still being studied.

Sabah’s Education Exco, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the matter has also been brought to the level of the education and health cluster, including obtaining views and feedback from other quarters.

“There is a need for us to do the research first before making any decision as there are many factors that must be taken into account, including the challenges we will face hereafter.

“For example, the Federal Government’s policy on Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) and universities are all related to Bahasa Melayu. So where will our children go after that? That is what we need to consider through a study,” he said.

Dr Mohd Arifin, who is also the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, was commenting on a media report recently that Sarawak will fully implement the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics subjects in English for its secondary schools starting in 2026.

Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee In was reported saying that the implementation was after the first cohort of primary school students who had previously used English in the two subjects starting with students entering Form One.

The proposal had previously been approved by the Ministry of Education for secondary schools in Sarawak to use English as a language medium to teach the subjects of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Additional Mathematics.

It was also one of the matters agreed with the Federal Government in the devolution of education autonomy to Sarawak through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) negotiations.
