‘Welcome to Sukau’ arch is damaged
A screengrab of the viral video shows the destroyed welcome gate
KINABATANGAN: The “Welcome to Sukau” arch collapsed after it was believed to have been hit by a waste dump lorry moving with its cargo bed in an unloading position on Friday.

A video recording of the incident by another lorry driver coming from the opposite lane surfaced the same day.

It showed him trying to warn the driver of his tilted cargo bed before it crashed into the gate arch.

It is believed that the man also did not realise the truck cargo bed was in the unloading position.

A public vehicle parked at the location was also allegedly damaged. However, it is understood that no casualties were involved.

While the gate was destroyed, the elephant replica near the gate was reported to be fine.

The gate with decorative motifs of nature and wildlife is an attraction, welcoming tourists into the district.

It suits Sukau and Kinabatangan’s tourism products that are based on wildlife in addition to nature activities to explore along the Sukau River rich in natural beauty.
