PPMI is one of the bodies responsible for providing alternative education programs to the Bajau Laut or “sea gypsies”.
“The establishment of PPMI which was first based in Kampung Kabog, Jalan Kunak Tiga, here serves as an education centre that provides basic education facilities to the Bajau Laut and marginalised communities where these groups are left out of the national mainstream education programme,” said the PPMI Sabah Chief Coordinator Lajuliadi Lajahidi.
