Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu City Hall, through the Solid Waste Management Department (JPSP), has selected Bandaran Berjaya as the third location for implementing the Self Waste Disposal System (SPSS), enabling residents or commercial premises operators to dispose of waste directly into collection trucks according to a predefined schedule.

City Hall Deputy Director-General (Operations) Robert Lipon, in a statement here Saturday, said the system was enforced yesterday (June 15),  with garbage collection twice daily and residents or premises operators would have 20 minutes during specified times to dispose of waste.

Two specific areas in Bandaran Berjaya have been designated as garbage collection points: near Toojou Kota Kinabalu operating from 6.30am to 6.50am and 6.30pm to 6.50pm, and near Hotel Shang-ri La Kota Kinabalu operating from 7am to 7.20am and 7.00pm to 7.20pm.

SPSS was initially introduced on January 1, 2020 in Kampung Air and later expanded to Medan Selera Anjung Senja on April 1, 2023.

This event coincides with its proposed listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad ("Bursa Securities"), scheduled for 30 April 2025.
The effectiveness of SPSS is evident in significantly improved cooperation among urban residents for responsible waste disposal and heightened awareness of more effective waste management, contributing to Kota Kinabalu’s mission as a clean, green and liveable city.

“After implementing this system, positive impacts include no scattered and foul-smelling garbage, no leachate spillage, no rummaging through garbage, no trash bin vandalism, and a decrease in rat breeding,” Lipon said.

City Hall will enforce compliance with SPSS regulations intermittently. Entrepreneurs or residents found disposing of garbage outside designated times will face fines under the Bylaw (UUK) (Anti-Litter) 1984, Amendment 2005, ranging from RM20 to RM500 compound per offence.

Residents of Kota Kinabalu are urged to maintain city cleanliness, dispose of garbage responsibly, and participate in recycling to preserve the environment for future generations.
