TAMBUNAN: The Government will continue to identify areas that need to be equipped with Starlink devices to enable rural residents to access the internet.
State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said it aims to help bridge the gap between urban and rural areas.
He said the important thing is helping young people in the field of education to access or surf the internet to obtain the latest education-related information.
“It can also help rural entrepreneurs to promote their business online, thus improving their economy,” he said at the launch of the Kampung Makatip Rural Community Internet, here.
The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister I and Tambunan Assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.
Mohd Arifin said Kampung Makatip is one of 23 areas in the district equipped with Starlink devices.
He said his Ministry will launch the same programme in Kudat and Banggi after this.
Meanwhile, Sabah Net Chairman Datuk Azaman @ Azman Ruslan said the installation of Starlink devices throughout Sabah is aligned with the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya’s (SMJ) development plan towards digital transformation, especially for rural communities.
“The alternative is the installation of Starlink devices for residents in remote villages that have difficulty accessing the internet through the existing network of telecommunications towers,” he said.
He said the Government has provided a large allocation for this programme to ensure that rural communities can access the internet.
“In this digital era, rural communities also need smooth internet access because they also use the internet to carry out activities or business transactions online,” he explained.
