PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is set to join the intergovernmental organisation BRICS, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“We have indicated that we are (interested in joining BRICS). We have made a decision,” he said in an interview with Chinese outlet Guancha, hosted by Li Shimo, chairman of the Advisory Committee of the China Research Institute of Fudan University.

Adding that the formal procedure would begin soon, Anwar said he was also discussing the matter with Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and awaiting a response from the South African government.

Formed in 2006, BRICS initially comprised Brazil, Russia, India and China. It was joined by South Africa in 2011.
