The programme held for the first time in Ranau, involved two experienced coaches.
The two coaches are Yunaika Crawford Rogert (specialty hammer throw) with the best achievement of 73.16m who was also the winner of an Olympic bronze medal in 2004 and Jorge Luis Alfera Quinenes (Olympic high jump coach). Both are from Cuba.
The 3-day coaching clinic (June 6-8) was in collaboration with Sabah Athletics Association and Malaysia Federation.
Also present in the coaching was Technical Director of Athletics Malaysia, Robert Ballard.
Robert, when met, expected all participants to put into practice all the experiences gained throughout the programme to produce Sabah-born athletes, especially from the Ranau district.
“Practice all the experience and knowledge you have gained throughout this coaching to produce Ranau’s champions in the hammer throw and high jump events,” explained Robert while thanking the guidance from the two Cuban coaches.
The hammer throw is one of the four throwing events in regular outdoor track and field competitions, along with the discus throw, shot put and javelin.
Meanwhile, the high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it.
