Kota Kinabalu: A coalition of Sabah’s business sector associations urged the State Government to take a more active role in shaping labour laws based on the State’s economic needs rather than passively implementing Federal directives that may be unsuitable for Sabah’s conditions.
The concern was voiced during a joint press conference by Sabah Employers Association, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (Sabah Branch), Sabah Entrepreneurs Transformation, Kota Kinabalu Hardware, Machinery and Building Materials Traders Association, Sabah Timber Industry Association, Timber Association Sabah and Federation of Sabah Industries, here, Wednesday.
They said the proposed incorporation of the Housing Act into the Sabah Labour Ordinance amendments could be a “double whammy” for Sabah’s struggling businesses if implemented without considering the State’s unique circumstances.
“We request the government to put a halt to the proposed Housing Act Amendments to the Sabah Labour Ordinance because we see there’s a problem with the procedure,” said Sabah Employers Association President Yap Cheen Boon.
