BEAUFORT: An old bomb, believed to be a remnant from the Second World War, was discovered in Kampung Batu 61 Monternior, here, Friday.
A local resident found the 105mm artillery shell, weighing 11kg, near her home at 10am.
District Police Chief DSP Ismail Abdullah confirmed the discovery after receiving a report from a 57-year-old woman.
According to the complainant, on May 6, her brother used heavy machinery to excavate the land for road construction.
“About a month later, the soil had eroded due to rain, and on June 17, the complainant noticed a suspicious metal object but did not suspect anything unusual.
“However, today (Friday), the complainant went to look at the object again, and it appeared clearly to be an old bomb,” he said. Ismail said a team from the District Police Headquarters (IPD) Bomb Disposal Unit was dispatched for an initial inspection and security control.
“The police have set up a yellow tape and stationed officers at the site for security while awaiting the Bomb Disposal Unit from the Sabah Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK).
“The old bomb is believed to be a Second World War relic,” he said.
Ismail added that the bomb disposal operation was promptly carried out and completed at 5.20pm by the IPK Sabah Bomb Disposal Unit, assisted by the IPD Beaufort Bomb Disposal Unit.
