Kota Kinabalu: A total of 16 basketball teams are taking part in the inaugural Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Haji Mulia Championship currently being held at the Kota Kinabalu Community Centre.
They were represented by players from other districts, including Bumiputras and the number of teams also include four women teams.
Organising chairman Ricky Jin How Ran hopes the tournament will serve as a platform to produce players with potential to make a good name for the state and country at the international stage in the future.
“I also hope this tournament will encourage more players from other ethnic and races to participate in the sport, and not just from the Chinese community alone ,” he added.
He praised Sabah Basketball Association president Phan Chee Yong and Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association President Fung Chun Fatt for their efforts not only to promote a healthy lifestyle in the community through the sport but also to lay a foundation in order to produce future leaders with character.
He also thanked all those involved to help organise the tournament which started on June 20 with the final scheduled on June 29.
Meanwhile, the official opening ceremony held on Friday was officiated by Pandikar Amin and also present were Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, Phan, Fung and other top basketball officials in the state.
