Jail for cutting hotel’s cables
The charge under Section 431A of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: Two local men were sentenced to five months’ jail each by the Magistrate’s Court, here, Thursday, for committing mischief by cutting cables at a hotel construction site in Asia City.

Mohd Azrun Achik, 28, and Muhd Rahmat Abdul Kadir, 35, pleaded guilty to jointly committing the offence of damaging cables belonging to Sheraton Hotel Asia City on June 27 at 3.50am on the 14th floor of the building.

Earlier, Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles was informed by the prosecution that the duo were caught red-handed cutting the cables by workers at the site.

The men tried to flee but were then arrested by the workers who found cut cables in their bags.

Azrun and Rahmat were then handed over to the police, said prosecuting officer Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik.

In another case, a 30-year-old woman was fined RM1,800 or sentenced to two months in jail for possessing gambling paraphernalia.

Shahron Chu admitted to purchasing two lottery tickets without a licence at 5pm on June 28 at the five-foot-way of Yu Sang Supermarket in Kepayan.

She was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution informed the court that Chu was arrested by a police team following a tip-off. 

A check on Chu found a mobile phone, mobile printer, two illegal lottery tickets and RM35 cash.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old undocumented man was jailed five months for possessing a stolen smartphone.

Jobless Md Nasrin Juaini pleaded guilty to possessing the Redmi 6 Pro gadget belonging to Md Hasim Akino at 6.15 am on March 3 in front of Jesselton Point here.

Kelvan informed the court that Nasrin wanted to sell the smartphone. 

Unrepresented, Nasrin requested a lenient sentence as he has a pregnant wife. Kelvan applied for a deterrent sentence.

The court ordered Nasrin to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence.
