Kota Kinabalu: Another potential tourist attraction in Sandakan is the Japanese cemetery located just beside the Chinese cemetery, within walking distance of the Heritage Walk site.
Initiator of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, Lai King Hang, said the visit of new Sabah Tourism Board CEO, Julinus Jeffrey Jimit, to the district spurred hope and enthusiasm that the site would be beautified.

According to Lai, many tourists, especially Japanese, visited the cemetery which was not well-kept at that moment.
“This cemetery existed long before the war. This kind of cemetery can also be found in Penang and Singapore.
