Kota Kinabalu: Local entrepreneur Amanda Omeychua has proudly completed her 89th climb to the summit of Mount Kinabalu.
She recently shared her experience on Facebook with a photo taken at Low’s Peak at 4,095m, which captured exceptional weather conditions.
Amanda, 30, is a dedicated mother of a two-year-old and a seasoned climber. She owns a business that offers services such as arranging training and managing equipment for new Mount Kinabalu climbers.
“During my recent climb, the weather was indeed harsh, so for safety, suitable clothes and durable shoes to counter the mountain’s temperature as well as the peak’s slope were necessary,” she told Daily Express.
Amanda had been battling health issues since she was 14 years old, including spending three months in a hospital and dealing with a recurring fever for eight months due to perforated heart valves and an infection.
“At the age of 19, I began to recover and dared to try new things, engaging in extreme activities, challenging different heights and has since become unstoppable,” she recalled.
“Cold weather does not interfere with my cardio health as long as I wear appropriate clothing when climbing mountains.
“I balance my health and passion by maintaining a proper diet and regular training.”
In 2018, to recover from a leg fracture and the trauma of the Lombok, Indonesia earthquake, Amanda took on her first ascent to the Everest Base Camp.
“Mountain climbing helps recovering leg fractures as it strengthens muscles and bones. It does not only boost cardiovascular health, but it also offers mental health benefits,” she said.
“My fondest memory was also of climbing mountains in the peninsula. I love the team spirit as well as the connection with nature in this outdoor adventure.”
