Penang eatery worker charged with possessing IS material

PETALING JAYA: A worker at an eatery was charged in the Butterworth sessions court today with possessing material related to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
Zul Khairi Nasir, 33, nodded as the charge was read out before judge Noor Aini Yusof, Astro Awani reported.
ADVERTISEMENT No plea was recorded as the case was transferred to the High Court.
According to the charge sheet, Zul Khairi is accused of possessing the IS material in his handphone. He allegedly committed the offence at 1521 Sungai Dua, Butterworth, at 9.35am on June 23.
The charge was framed under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code for the possession of items associated with terrorist groups or acts. If convicted, he faces up to seven years’ jail or a fine, while any property involved in the offence will be seized.
Deputy public prosecutor Syafinas Shabudin prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
