Ranau to host paragliding championship

Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia Day Paragliding Accuracy Championship will be held at the Ranau Paragliding Park, Jalan Kompleks Sukan Ranau, Ranau on September 14-15.

It was officially announced by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai on Friday.

The competition held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration is open to all healthy Malaysians and international participants with minimum PL1 paragliding licence and have valid insurance. 

There will be open and group categories to be competed and the top three winning prizes for each category are RM1,500, RM1,000 and RM700.

This event coincides with its proposed listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad ("Bursa Securities"), scheduled for 30 April 2025.
The first window on the first day will begin at 10.30am, second at 11.30am, third at 1pm and closing window is at 3pm, while the second day’s window will open at 10.30am and second at 11.30am before closing at 1pm.

Entry fee is RM150 for Malaysians and RM200 for international participants and they can be paid online or during the registration with the closing date set at August 30.

Joniston, who is also Sabah Tourism Board chairman, is scheduled to officiate the opening ceremony and the prize presentation will be held on Sunday at 2pm.

Meanwhile, the Sabah Camping Fest (SCF) 2.0 organised by Sabah Camping & Caravan Association (SCCA) and Persatuan Eksplorasi Pelancongan Sabah (PES) is set to take place in Ranau on September 13-15.

This followed the success of the first edition held in Kiulu last year which drew more than 500 participants including some from outside the State.

Apart from camping activity, there will also be tug-of-war and volleyball events. The participants will also get the opportunity to take part in the corporate social responsibility (CSR) in selected venues including orphanages around Ranau area.

The main objective is to promote districts in Sabah as one of the main eco rural tourism destinations in Malaysia. 

At the same time to help raise the importance of environmental conservation in addition to  the economic benefit.

The closing date is on August 31 and participants are encouraged to register early to get the special early bird fees only offered in the month of July.
