THE sighting of a snake on a property can have a positive or negative omen on the occupants.
In Indian folklore, snakes, especially cobras, are associated with various deities such as Lord Shiva and Vishnu.

A cobra entering a place might be seen as a divine sign or blessing and could symbolise protection, prosperity, or the presence of a powerful deity.
Conversely, in some interpretations, a cobra might also be seen as a warning or a sign of upcoming challenges.
The snake’s presence could indicate that the place needs to be purified or that negative energy needs to be addressed.
I write this week’s column based on an incident in which a cobra entered a factory in Penang, and instead of chasing it away, the workers killed it.

There are several interpretations of snakes because they strongly influence all cultures and beliefs.
When they shed their skin, snakes, including cobras, are often interpreted as symbols of transformation, renewal, and rebirth.

A cobra entering a factory or house could be seen as a sign of upcoming changes or a period of transformation.
The sighting of a cobra can be seen as a warning or a sign of upcoming challenges.
On the other hand, hidden dangers are indicated, as cobras are venomous. Their presence might also symbolise warnings or threats that need to be recognised and dealt with.
In Hinduism, killing a cobra is considered a serious act because snakes, particularly cobras, are associated with various deities and hold significant spiritual importance.
If a cobra is killed, specific prayers and rituals are recommended to be performed to seek forgiveness and mitigate potential negative consequences.
Among the common remedies or prayers performed to alleviate the situation are:
- Nag Panchami observance: Nag Panchami is an event dedicated to the worship of snakes, particularly cobras. Observing this festival can help you seek forgiveness and blessings from snake deities. Devotees offer milk, flowers, and other offerings to snake idols or real snakes.
- Recitation of mantras: Nag Gayatri Mantra “Om Naagaay Vidmahe Vishadantaya Dheemahi Tanno Sarpa Prachodayat.” can help ease the situation.
- Nag Stotra: Reciting verses that glorify and seek the blessings of snake deities, such as those dedicated to Ananta, Vasuki, Takshaka, and other prominent nagas.
- Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Puja: Performing his prayer can alleviate the dosha (fault) caused by harming or killing a snake. It involves elaborate rituals and offerings to snake idols.
- Naga Pratishta: This ceremony involves installing a naga (snake) idol in a temple and performing regular worship to appease the snake deities.
- Offering donations and feeding devotees: Donating to temples, especially those dedicated to snake deities, can be a remedy. This could include providing milk, grains, and other offerings.
Feeding devotees can also help in mitigating any negative consequences.
- Visiting temples dedicated to snake deities: Visiting and offering prayers at temples dedicated to Lord Shiva (often depicted with a snake around his neck) or temples dedicated to snake deities can further help lessen the situation.
- Chanting specific mantras: Reciting sacred verses is believed to appease snake deities, which can be beneficial. It’s essential to consult with a knowledgeable priest or spiritual expert to ensure that the appropriate prayers and rituals are performed correctly.
They can provide specific guidance based on the individual’s situation and local customs.
It is incorrect to dismiss the sighting or killing of a snake and its associated beliefs as mere superstition because their profound meanings are rooted in the mythological world.
From ancient times, snakes have been seen as protectors of treasures, sacred spaces, and water bodies.
They are believed to guard against evil spirits and negative energies, ensuring the well-being of people.
In Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu, represented by snake-like entities, play significant roles in determining an individual’s fate and karmic influences.
Their movements are believed to impact various aspects of life, including health, wealth, and spiritual growth.
In Hindu spiritual practices, particularly in yoga and tantra, the concept of Kundalini describes a primal energy coiled at the base of the spine, often depicted as a serpent. Awakening this energy through spiritual practices leads to enlightenment and self-realisation.
