“As a response to one of the 17 goals in the SDG, the State Government through DBKK introduced this campaign as an initial step in inviting the community to jointly deal with the issue of plastic and climate change,” Sabin said.
Kota Kinabalu: Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said the ban on plastic bags in all business premises effective Aug. 1 will lead to a cleaner environment in Sabah and is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic are dumped into oceans and landfills which have caused irreparable damage to the world’s ecosystems and wildlife.

“We started the campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags by business premises voluntarily and then introduced a ban on the provision of plastic bags by traders to buyers in stages on Saturday, Sunday and Monday every week.”
He said the initial stage of the campaign received less response and attention from the community and traders.
“Now this campaign has entered the final phase and we have found that it has received a positive response from all parties as a result of information sessions and education to the public through social media, local mainstream media in addition to face-to-face approach of DBKK officials with traders and also the associations involved,” he said.

He said the effort to take care of the environment is not only the responsibility of the Local Authority (PBT) and the government, but all.
