'Conservation efforts pay off': Borneo pygmy elephants spotted eating planted Napier grass in Kinabatangan

KINABATANGAN: A herd of Borneo pygmy elephants were seen enjoying eating Napier grass that were planted near Nature Lodge Kinabatangan on Tuesday, underscoring the success of conservation efforts. 

The planting initiative, managed by the RESPonsible Elephant Conservation Trust (Respect) , involved the careful planting of 19,360 Napier grass stems per acre and 4,840 holes per acre.

Respect chairman Alexander Yee expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress, noting that the sight of elephants enjoying the Napier grass is a significant milestone. 

“The dedicated efforts of our team have paid off, providing a vital food source for the elephants and supporting the overall balance of the ecosystem,” he said.
