KENINGAU: Crime index in the district has increased to 79 cases from January to June this year compared to 73 cases in the same period last year, showing an increase by six cases or 8.2 per cent.
Keningau District Police Chief Supt Yampil Garai said violent crimes also increased to 19 cases from January to June compared to 18 cases in the same period, an increase by one case or 5.56 per cent.

However, he said that due to quality investigations and intelligence, the overall crime solution rate for both crime categories in 2024 was 117.2 per cent, with 79 cases reported and 93 cases solved.
Meanwhile, he said, prosecutions showed an increase of 21.58 per cent, with 71.58 per cent in 2024 compared to 49.70 per cent in the same period last year.
Yampil said for Narcotics Crime investigations, in 2024, a total of 304 various operations such as Op Tapis, Op Pusat Hiburan and Op Tapis Khas were conducted, focusing on areas involved in drug distribution and use.

“This effort is to curb drug distribution and substance abuse in this district. I believe that with continuous eradication by all parties and strong commitment from all elements in the Keningau police force, more areas identified as drug hubs can be eliminated this year,” he said.

He said three breach of trust cases were recorded in 2024 involving losses of RM93, 570 with one arrest, compared to three cases in 2023 involving losses of RM142, 324.14 with one arrest.
In this regard, he said, the police are always intensifying awareness campaigns for the public to avoid being deceived by scams promising lucrative profits.
At the same time, Yampil said the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division is always doing its best to realise the police leadership’s aspiration to make roads a safe place.
However, he said, the number of reported accidents for the six-month period this year were 381 cases compared to 371 cases in the same period last year, showing an increase of 10 cases or three per cent.
“Fatal accidents also increased, with 13 cases in 2024 compared to 11 cases in 2023, showing an increase of two cases or 15 per cent,” he said.
He said most reported accident cases were due to driver negligence, such as losing control due to speeding and carelessness when entering or exiting junctions or roundabouts.
From the crime prevention and community perspective, Yampil said planning for crime prevention awareness programmes among communities needs to be strengthened.
Yampil also presented Excellent Service Award Certificates and District Police Chief Appreciation to his men and women in the Keningau police headquarters.
