Kota Kinabalu: Education and awareness regarding registration of children with disabilities in Sabah is vital to determine the accurate number for those with special needs and be provided with the necessary aid.
Sabah Welfare Services Department cum Sabah Council of Social Services Management Chairman, Jais Asri, said the exact number of special needs children is unknown due to the lack of registration.

He said this was due to the lack of awareness and understanding among Sabahans on the importance of registering those with disabilities.
“The number of children with autism registered with the Malaysian Social Welfare Department has increased by over 600 per cent from 6,991 children in 2013 to 53,323 children in 2023, nationwide.
