Sandakan pupil dies from food poisoning

Kota Kinabalu: A Year Four student of a school in Sandakan died, believed to be due to food poisoning on Thursday.
Sabah Education director Datuk Raisin Saidin said the initial investigation found that the food poisoning was not caused by food from the school canteen but the effect of eating food at home.

He said the student’s mother, who ate the same food, was also warded for treatment.
“On July 23, the class teacher was informed through the Whatsapp application that the student could not attend school due to food poisoning and the student was given sick leave for two days from July 23 to 24 after receiving treatment at a clinic.
“The class teacher was informed by the student’s family that the student suddenly fainted on Wednesday night (July 24) and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being taken to hospital,” he said.
According to Raisin, the school was informed of the student’s death at 7 am on Thursday.

He said the department would assist the victim’s family with the takaful insurance claims.
“We will also provide a complete report on the case once all investigations have been completed by the Sandakan District Health Office,” he said.
