Kota Kinabalu to host two major international events

Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu city will be hosting two major international sporting events organised by XMultisport Event at the end of the year.

The Asia Triathlon Cup making a return for the second year running will kick start the event on November 2-3 at Prince Phillip Park, Tanjung Aru.

It is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Environment Sabah, the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), and the Official Hotel Partner Ming Garden Hotel and Residences. 

Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said at a press conference at Ming Garden Hotel on Friday that following the success last year with more than 200 entries, they are hoping to attract some 500 participants this year.

“We are thrilled to welcome back the Asia Triathlon Cup to our beautiful city. Last year’s event was a tremendous success, showcasing Sabah’s ability to host international sporting events of this magnitude. With our stunning natural landscapes and warm hospitality, we are confident that this year’s event will be even more memorable.

“The return of the Asia Triathlon Cup not only exemplifies our commitment to promoting sports tourism but also boosts our local economy by attracting athletes, supporters, and tourists from around the world. Events like these play a crucial role in positioning Sabah as a leading destination for outdoor sports tourism,” he said.

Malaysia Triathlon Association president Tony Tan Beng Hong who was present added that the ATC cup will also serve as one of the qualifying races for the SEA Games next year.

The second event to be held will be the inaugural Sabah Tourism Golf Challenge scheduled on December 5-7.

It is again organised by XMultisport Event in collaboration with BIMP-EAGA and will be hosted by  Sutera Harbour Marina Golf and Country Club, Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club, and Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai.

“We are thrilled to host the Sabah Tourism Golf Challenge and look forward to welcoming golfers from all over Southeast Asia to experience the beauty and hospitality of Sabah.

“This event not only promotes the sport of golf but also highlights Sabah as a premier travel destination.

“The event aims to bring together 360 golfers from across the region, offering an exceptional opportunity for both individual and team competitions.

“As of today, participants from South Korea, China, Singapore and the Philippines have already registered, with more expected to join,” said Joniston at the press conference.

According to him, the championship offers a total prize of up to RM100,000, including a special hole-in-one prize, competitors will have the chance to showcase their skills and vie for significant rewards. 

The event also promises to be a star-studded affair, featuring appearances from renowned golf celebrities and influencers, including Novita Lam. 

Registration will commence on August 8 via Ticket2U.
