BEAUFORT: The Jerayawara Santuni Komuniti Madani Peka@LPPKN: Cakna Ibubapa programme instils community awareness to build a harmonious family.
The Pertubuhan Muafakat Titipan Amal Isteri Wakil Rakyat Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (Mutiara GRS) (Mutiara GRS) President, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, said the community also has a role to play and needs to take a serious look at the increase in child abuse cases in the State.
ADVERTISEMENT “Until May 2023, a total of 2,959 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported of which Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 647 cases, followed by Sabah with 333 cases and 326 cases in Kuala Lumpur.
“The public should take a serious look at the increase in cases of abuse and together with the Government try to find a way to prevent it from continuing.
“The Government will not compromise with any offense involving the rights and welfare of children in line with the Children’s Act 2001.
“Therefore, this programme will not be successful without cooperation and support from all parties, including local authorities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the entire community because with close cooperation, we can build a safer and more harmonious community for future generations,” she said at the programme held at the DHRM Unity Hall in Kampung Lago, here, recently.

In 2021, there were 326 cases recorded and this figure jumped to 3,887 cases in 2022 and in 2023, between January and October alone, a total of 4,994 cases were reported.
“Therefore, it is very important for parents to have and possess knowledge and skills in monitoring and protecting their children from cyber threats,” she said.
At the event, Mutiara GRS also donated RM1,000 to the Community Rehabilitation Centre (PPDK) of Kampung Sinar Lumadan, PPDK Beaufort and PPDK Kuala Penyu and RM2,000 to the Beaufort District Educational Centre for Disabled Children.
