Drunk driving: Duo jailed, fined

The two were charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020, which provides for a jail term of up to two years and fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000 and lost qualification from holding or getting a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: Two men were jailed a day and fined a total of RM20,300 by the Traffic Court here Monday for drunk driving.
Helen Martin, 54, and Devlin Fedrick, 34, pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offence early this year, here.
ADVERTISEMENT Helen was sentenced to a day’s jail and fined RM10,300 or three months jail for committing the offence at 1.45am, on Feb 9, at Jalan Coastal in front of the Centre Point Shopping Complex.
Devlin was also handed a day’s jail and fined RM10,000 or three months jail for the committing the same offence at 1.30am on March 16, Jalan Pintas, Kopungit.
Helen and Devlin, respectively requested leniency.
The magistrate ordered them to serve their one-day jail effective Monday.

Meanwhile, a man was fined RM1,000 or two weeks jail for involving in illegal car racing.
ADVERTISEMENT Mohd Gadafi Mattasin, 31, admitted to taking part in a competition or trial of speed, the Kemajuan traffic light to the Centre Point traffic light, at 11.30pm, on March 16.
Earlier, the prosecution told the court that Gadafi was detained by traffic police during ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ for endangering themselves and other road users.
The offence under Section 81(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987 provides for a fine of up to RM2,000 or up to six months or both, on conviction.

In another case, an 18-year-old car wash worker was charged with theft.
Putra Zainudin Amdi pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to stealing RM128 from Tan Pei Shin on July 8 at 4.30pm at a laundry outlet in Beverly Hills Plaza, Penampang.
He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code.
The court set Aug 19 for pre-trial case management and released the accused on a bail of RM1,000 in a surety.
In the same court, a man claimed trial to a charge of housebreaking and theft.
Nordin Ahmad was accused of committing the offence along with an accomplice still at large at a dental clinic in Tanjung Aru Plaza at 8am on May 12.
Lovely offered Nordin bail at RM2,000 in two sureties.
