Escapee found hiding in chicken coop

KENINGAU: A prisoner who escaped from the Keningau Magistrate’s Court after being sentenced was found hiding in a chicken coop at a housing area near the old Keningau hospital on Monday.
Keningau District Police Chief Supt Yampil Garai said the suspect, Muhamad Safwan Shahir Jasuf Abdullah, a 24-year-old local from Kg Tajau Tuaran, was recaptured around 9.30pm.

“Acting on information from the public, the suspect was found hiding in a chicken coop,” he said in a statement, Tuesday.
According to the facts of the case, around 2.30pm in the Keningau Magistrate’s Court, the suspect made a dramatic escape involving jumping from multiple heights.
He jumped out of the dock as soon as a six-month prison sentence was read out by Magistrate Flavian Edward.
“The suspect then pushed open the window glass panels and jumped from the second floor straight onto the garage roof about two metres high,” he said.

“He (the suspect) then jumped down from the garage roof about four meters high and ran towards the court compound fence some 70 metres away,” he said, adding the suspect evaded capture by running towards the main road near the Rusa Roundabout in Pekan Keningau.
The suspect was an inmate at the Kota Kinabalu Central Prison along with 11 other prisoners on retrial for various offences.

The suspect was brought to court here with seven other prisoners for retrial on Monday.
He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and has six previous records, four criminal offenses and two drug offenses.
The suspect is now being held at the Keningau District Police Headquarters lock-up for further investigation.
