Ensuring longevity of Native Customary laws

KENINGAU: The State Native Customary practitioners play an important role in enshrining the Institutions of Native Customs that have been inherited from ancestors.
Bingkor Assemblyman Datuk Robert Tawik @ Nordin said the existence of the Native Court (MAN) is protected by the Federal Constitution which gives recognition to both the states of Sabah and Sarawak to continue the application and implementation of native customary law including the establishment Native Court.

He said one of MAN’s functions is to process claims for native inheritance and small property for non-Islamic natives as stipulated in the Administration of Native Inheritance and Small Property Ordinance 1941.
Robert, who is also Assistant Minister of Public Works, said this while officiating the Bingkor Native Court building, recently.
He said customs need to continue to be dignified so can be passed to future generations.
At the same time, Robert called for all Custom Holders of the Bingkor Native Court to take care of and utilise the court building.

Robert thanked the District Bingkor Chief OKK Daniel Palangi for making efforts to replace the old building.
